The Budget Gamer:
Things That Will Improve a Gamerís Life For Cheap
Special Edition - Super Dual Box
If you thought the Titanium X-Joy Converter was as cool as it got, you were dead wrong. Ladies and gentlemen, I bring you the Super Dual Box. It is, without a doubt, the coolest PC gaming accessory I have ever come across. Iíve been using it for months and I canít imagine how I lived without it.
For $14.90 plus shipping you get this little blue adapter that connects to your PC via USB. With it you can connect two (count Ďem, TWO) Playstation and Playstation 2 peripherals to your computer at the same time! Iím talking Dual Shocks, Dual Shock 2s, racing wheels, arcade sticks, dance pads, the whole nine yards. Full support, too - analog sticks, L3 and R3, vibration feedback, you name it. Yes, itís as cool as it sounds!
Connection is as simple as downloading some drivers from an included floppy disc and plugging the Super Dual Box into your PC. After that all you have to do is connect your controllers and start gaming!
The reasons why this little thing rocks so hard are numerous. For one, the Dual Shock 2 design easily bests every PC gamepad on the market, bar none, so why spend money on useless pads when you can just make your PS2 controller do double duty? Second, it has flawless driver support and will be compatible with any title that allows gamepad configuration, unlike the XID Xbox controller drivers that do tend to be a bit flaky at times. Third, you can connect two controllers through one USB port. Not only does this conserve ports, but also you essentially get two adapters for the price of one! Iím sure emulation gamers will appreciate this, as well as anyone whoís tried to enjoy the two-player goodness of console ports like The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King while sharing a keyboard. Fourth, said console ports can be configured to mirror their original controls. Trust me, you will understand how much this means if you ever spent hours trying to get Tony Hawkís Pro Skater 3, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Silent Hill 3, Grand Theft Auto III, GTA: Vice City, or any EA Sports title to feel ďrightĒ. Fifth, since it supports PS One devices as well, you can put those old Dual Shocks to use instead of letting them collect dust in some closet somewhere. And last but not least, itís not ugly. This may not seem like much, but take a look at some of the other PS2 USB adapters - they look like something the `80s spit-up. The Super Dual Box is small, sleek, and utilitarian just eye catching enough to be admirable but just understated enough not to draw undo attention to itself.
If you ever tried to play anything on your PC that just worked better with a controller and you are a Playstation or Playstation 2 owner (and who isnít by now?) this is as must-have as ďmust-haveĒ can get. Thereís no fine print, itís no scam, this thing does exactly what it intends to do. I can testify to that. Itís actually usurped my Controller S as my default PC pad because of its superior drivers. I can also testify to buying from Play-Asia - I have recommended them in the past, I get all my imports from there, they are trustworthy, have cheap shipping rates, and incredibly fast delivery, especially considering that your package is coming all the way from Hong Kong.
