Tetris 99 Training Thread

#1

Post by S1x » Thu Feb 21, 2019 4:11 pm

Tetris 99 (alternate title: Tetris Fortnite) has been out for a week now after a surprise release, and it has everything a Tetris player could ask for. By posting in this topic, you already accept this premise. :p

This topic is to exchange advice and stories on the way to accruing more wins (or maybe your first win).

Attacking

Most of the time, I target for KOs. The more KOs you get, the more badges you get, which increases your attack power later in the game.

Sometimes I'm halfway through the game without any KOs. This is when I start gambling a bit and I'll temporarily target Badges right before sending a long combo, because you also gain all the badges that player had upon KO.

Whenever 3 or more people are targeting me (or 2 in the late game), I target Attackers and start clearing a bunch of single or double lines, because you gain a flat bonus on all your line clears in this situation. This is the most consistent way for me to get KOs. Don't panic if you see 10 targets on you right at the start; the garbage timer is very generous at the beginning.

Stacking

The very short version of my stacking strategy is to always plan a few pieces ahead and to create situations where you can combo repeatedly. It's hard to go into more detail than that, but luckily I can show instead of tell.

I personally don't go for T-Spin Triples, because they're lame and the rotation system is still lame

My primary endgame strategy is to KO myself if things look unrecoverable so that I can pretend no one KO'd me.

I target kos mostly, but switch to attackers if I'm really getting targeted a lot. Last win I had I was sending double digit junk out with single line clears.

I hate T-Spin triples as well, but only because I can't set them up properly. What do you have against them, S1x?

I kinda don't like the reward system favoring the geometrically weirdo byproduct of the rotation system, even if I acknowledge the skill required to capitalize on it.

Mostly I'm just old and set in my ways, though. Learned to play when a Tetris was the best play in Tetris and don't want to change.

I have pretty much the same strategy as far as attacking. Go for KOs unless there's a s***ton of people attacklng me, and then I'll go for attackers until hopefully I get a few off my back. If I've got a badge or two around the 50 player mark, sometimes I like attacking other badges to get rid of some of the main competition before going back to KOs for the home stretch.

yo, s1x I just watched that video and I can honestly say my brain works at about half that speed. Maybe it's the oil pen when I'm playing games but damn dude. Brain be real quick with it.

The way the T block "rotates" into the T-Spin Triple setup is an extremely un-intuitive thing that nobody would realistically expect to happen, yet it does.

There's other quirks about the now-standard rotation system too, like being able to somewhat kick pieces off the ground, that makes even instant gravity way too simple to play in. When combined with the "bag" piece randomization, single player survival mode is basically a solved game, making the only interesting thing remaining how to play them fast.

At least multiplayer has a hard cap on how much you can rotate pieces before they're forced to lock

What’s your preferred rotation system?

i know you werent asking me but i would imagine his answer would be:

https://tetris.wiki/TGM_Rotation

particularly, for me at least, the tgm3 version is perfectly flexible and permissive (with its I and T piece floorkicks) without being overly complicated

ah, I didn't realize the Effect/99 rotation system was different from what's standard in TGM.

Through 60 games I have 743 Tetrises and have cleared no lines via T-spin.

I'm starting to work in more T-spin Doubles because it's pretty close to my normal stacking except I have to place the S or Z horizontally instead of vertically. It also may have saved my life once so far.

T-spin doubles are pretty well incorporated into my game now. If I see opportunity for one, I can now set them up quickly and easily.

I'm trying to incorporate more t-spins in my game but habits just get in the way and I usually miss most opportunities. I should probably be practicing in effect or a browser tetris or something because it's too easy for me to just get caught up in the hustle and bustle of a tetris 99 game

Event!

I think it would be really cool if multiple VGFers made the top 999
