When you're on a third (or fourth) playthrough of Three Houses:

Yeah, I wish I had done more recruiting in my first playthrough so I didn’t have to brutally kill so many characters that I liked. RIP Hilda, Ignatz, Mercedes, Ingrid, Annette, Catherine...

Oh is she the one you can’t recruit from Golden Deer? That makes sense. I knew it was Hubert and Dedue for the other two.

Yeah. I'm not exactly sure the justification, but I'm just going to assume that switching houses is too much effort.

That's my new head canon, but the reason is probably because she's part of one of most important noble families in the Alliance.

Hilda actually is recruitable, but only if you go with my route and only in the last two chapters of part 1. She plays no further role whatsoever in the story if you don't recruit her, so I have no idea what they were thinking.

Lost items still spawn for her before that, though. I had five or six that were hers when the game finally decided I could talk to her.

...so there's no non-recruitable character from golden deer??? Wat.

edit because apparently I should have specified other than claude because the leaders are kind of a given that you can't recruit them

^ There is. He's named Claude.

I've put 60 hours into this game.... and I'm still only at the timeskip for the Golden Deer Route.

And i still have two more routes to go....

In all fairness, I think the reason people are treating the fourth route as a "secret" route is because it wasn't advertised as being there - The marketing was sayng "Pick the Black Eagles, Blue Lions, or the Golden deer!" not "Pick the Black Eagles, blue Lions, Golden Deer, or the other route!". This isn't like Fire Emblem Fates which was very upfront about the fact that there was a third route.

hell... my first playthrough I had no idea that there was even a route-split within that route - yes the game does indeed tell you at a specific point "this WILL affect the story" and it is possible to stumble into it by accident... but how many of you people who played that particular route knew it was there beforehand?

^I knew there was a major split in the BE house but I didn’t know the nature of it.

I didn't know about it until ian started talking about it tbh. Doubt I would've guessed otherwise.

I didn't read much about the game beforehand, so when I got to the split I just assumed all three routes had one.

After revelations made on the Golden Deer Route....
Spoiler.
I have reason to believe that the "Gods" and the dragons are aliens.

I’m also in the middle of my GD playthrough. Just got to the time skip.

Really regretting not recruiting more students in my BE playthrough.

I'm not sure whether squeege is going to finish his deer playthrough. Haven't asked him about three houses since i went out of town.

And naturally I don't have the switch rn. ._.

So when I got to the decision about whether or not to go with Edelgard, I split the save file in two. I finished the Silver Snow storyline on Saturday night, and now I'm going through the Crimson Rose storyline. I felt kind of like the bad guy taking sides against Rhea, but I guess I have to hear Edelgard's side of the story as well.

Regardless, I'm still having fun 100+ hours in.

No matter what house I choose, in every playthrough, I will always recruit Petra on my team. I can't kill Petra. Too sympathetic. She and Felix are essentially my "killing machines."

I started a Blue Lions playthrough a while back and I made sure to recruit Petra ASAP. Makes up for the fact that Dimitri isn't a particularly interesting character to me
Spoiler.
I now know to defeat former students with "Byleth" (or, as I named her, Hyoyeon) post-timeskip, because you can recruit some of them.

I was able to recruit Lysithia last night and holy **** she is a beast.

Lysithea is honestly one of the best units in any FE game. She just destroys things. With no remorse.
