This month in Zelda speedrunning: Stale Reference Manipulation

Uh, how to explain this. Forgive me, this will probably be far from accurate.

Late last month, a glitch called Stale Reference Manipulation was found in OoT, which lets you rewrite chest contents. This is cool but it also led to the discovery of Arbitrary Code Execution which basically lets you run code...or something. (it's a long video and I watched it a few days ago, sorry) So you can do stuff like delete the Hookshot or change Link's attributes. Not really useful or viable in any RTA run (as of right now) but definitely cool.

The real gold is in MM though, as it was found that SRM can warp you to the Moon. This is a significant improvement over a method found earlier this year that involved playing the Song of Soaring 63 times on the Wii U version. (no, really) At first it was believed that this new method was not RTA-viable, but as-of a few hours ago people have begun to whittle the any% time to sub-40 on console. The Holy Grail of MM speedrunning has been found.

I haven't seen any runs of MM with the new route but I hope for the runners' sake that it's less stupid than new SS runs. i hope you like title screens and repeating trials.

it's really **** cool they finally found a viable moon warp though. there have been a LOT of big Zelda discoveries recently it's just unfortunate that some of them also happen to make the run worse :p

Update: opening the debug menu without cheats

Update 2: faster method of Moon Warp found, saves getting a Bottle and Zora Mask (which does make the Majora fight a lot harder), record is now just over 30 minutes

Bonus: Majora's Snipers
