i haven't watched yet. I'm assuming because it's Nintendo Online they didn't say anything about patches or stuff to make online stuff run smoother?

So they did cut Pokemon just to sell them back. Will this make the CU Podcast's "Scumbag Seller of the Week"?
The Pokemon aren't behind a paywall. They can be freely transferred or traded to the base game.

This is no different than Gen III when many Pokemon weren't catchable in the Hoenn games (RSE) but could be traded over from the Kanto games (FR/LG) with no problem.
The Pokemon are behind a paywall from what I can tell. Pokemon are an experience, not just a commodity, otherwise we'd have some kind of weird but neat stockmarket simulator. Trading them is fine and dandy, but can you catch them? Experience running into a wild shiny and flipping your ****? Deciding if you'll catch this male or knock it out for the next waifu version you come across? Wondering which area they'll be in, exploring around to find them? No, but you can have it traded to you with a dumb name like "lol u cant aforddlc" or something. Noice. I think it's cool that there's a way to obtain them but part of the experience is lost. I mean, many people won't care and that's fine, but it's true. So you either buy the DLC to get the full experience or try trading for them.

By transfer I assume you mean by that paid app, right? Paywall there too. They're locking you into trading if you don't want to pay extra, which I think is good that it's possible at all. But still, I think if you own every game, as a collector, why should you not have full access to all content in its entirety? Used to be you had all the games, you had all the content. Now that's not good enough.

I'm not saying DLC is bad but I don't think this is how it should've been done, personally. Ideally, they'd have added all original Pokemon and new ones, then added new areas and Pokemon down the line separately

Yeah, I’m not disagreeing with you necessarily. But I am saying this has always been how it has been. Even the very fact that there are version-exclusive Pokémon is an example of this, and that has literally always been the model for Pokémon.

I can understand being annoyed by that, but it seems inconsistent that people are choosing to get annoyed by it right now .

I don't see how it's always been this way though. It's been similar, sure, but without paying (aside from buying the games themselves, of course) you must rely on trades, and trades alone. If you caught all 151 Pokemon in Yellow, guess what, you can transfer them all to Crystal, no hassle. You caught them all yourself, named them and everything. "I remember catching this Mewtwo, awesome. Oh, there's my event Mew, proud of that. Here's my special Surfing Pikachu, can't forget this bad boy, that was an ordeal!" There's a history there. You can't transfer Pokemon included in this update from another game like that, or go catch them yourself without paying. You can only trade, you're effectively cut off from part of the experience. I'm not sure how well the catchphrase "Gotta receive 'em all!" would've went.

It's minor, verging on pedantic, so certainly not everyone will care about it, but trading was supposed to be a neat optional gimmick, not a necessity, and was pointless if you collected all the games. Now you can own everything from the Sega Pico games, to Hey You Pikachu, and everything in between but it won't matter--you're tradin' or payin'.

Like I said though, it's not that big of a deal and it's cool there's a way to get the Pokemon regardless. There's just no denying this was a sloppy and greedy decision on their part, they know they'll make more money this way prodding people into pay for that Home thing or buy the DLC if they don't want to trade for every single Pokemon they want.

I think the point in bringing up FR/LG was that you couldn't transfer between Gen II and III.

That was a hardware incompatibility though, not a cashgrab, wasn't it? Do any original Game Boy game interface with Game Boy Advance ones? I've not heard of such a thing.

You just mentioned that trading wouldn’t be necessary “if you collected all the games.” I fail to see how releasing DLC is somehow so much worse than them selling multiple games.

It’s not a perfect model—but it never has been. That’s all I’m trying to say.

Honestly what Pokemon is doing makes sense given the current market model for big name console releases. It's just that the current market model for big name console releases **** sucks. Yes I am old and yes I am yelling at a cloud

You know what's cool about the expansions? Avery is the literally worst dressed character I have seen in my entire life. He looks like an Ace Attorney fangame character. It's like someone took all of my worst loud garbage outfits and somehow made them even worse. Absolutely incredible, 100/10, thank you, I finally feel represented in video games

Yeah I didn't see anyone complain about this back in 2013-2014! Considering this one cost $4.99 to replace the Pokémon that weren't included in the games.

^Just so we are clear. I definitely hated Pokemon Bank in 2013 and refused to pay for it. :p

Doug, can you remove 2 or 3 layers of sarcasm from your post so I can actually understand what point you’re trying to make?

Here’s the point I was making but with actual numbers:

And this is just from the last 2 generations. It’s just following a precedent set since the very beginning.

We can discuss whether it’s a good precedent or not! But that’s a different point entirely.
