Major game franchises like Doom, Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, and more will soon be Microsoft properties. That's because the Xbox and Windows maker announced Monday morning it is buying the corporate parent of Bethesda Softworks, ZeniMax Media.

"Like us, Bethesda are passionate believers in building a diverse array of creative experiences, in exploring new game franchises, and in telling stories in bold ways," Microsoft wrote in its announcement. "All of their great work will of course continue and grow and we look forward to empowering them with the resources and support of Microsoft to scale their creative visions to more players in new ways for you."
Microsoft bought ZeniMax for $7.5 BILLION. To put that in perspective, that's $.5 billion less than what Disney paid for to buy Marvel and Lucasfilm COMBINED.

Rare, Minecraft, Bungie, and Bethesda.

Where were you when Microsoft became the Disney of gaming?

they've been trying this for a while. one of the reasons why they buy up so many indie developers as well.

In any case I can't wait for Microsoft to acquire MK ULTRA so that they can activate my sleeper cell programming.

I thought Bungie split from them in 2007?

Don't forget Ninja Theory.

They also bought Double Fine... last year?

But yeah, this is the super most extreme buyout but this is something Microsoft's been trying to do for a while. Every E3 for the past however many years they've announced at least one studio acquisition. Hell, there were all those rumors about them buying Sega a few months ago (turned out to be false, obviously, but the fact that a lot of people went to "Microsoft bought them" when they heard about a "big Sega announcement" says a lot). From a business standpoint, I don't see why they'd stop at Bethesda.

I really hope gaming doesn't become like TV and film, where most companies and IPs are owned by a handful of corporate giants.

Doesn't seem like there's a lot of incentive for them not to at this point. Unless it gets to the point that the industry becomes so anti-consumer that it implodes on itself, but I don't think we're quite there yet.

It's capitalism buddy.

They tend to default to oligopolies.

If it does implode upon itself then maybe the indies will rise from the ashes. Covered in filth, soot and the blood of the patricians.
