I am ready for King K. Rool to be a clunky piece of apes*** hanging out with Ganondorf and Bowser at the bottom. Too bad too, I really wanted to have him in the game but never thought through how he'd compare competitively.

I at least hope Dark Samus might alleviate some of my issues with Samus. The weird delay on rockets seems like it could have been useful in prior games and in team but with what seems to be a conscious push to promote offensive play I think it may actually be a detriment. Idk.

^If @spooky scary bearatons is to be believed, K. Rool's super armor mechanics will be enough to keep him competitive.

Armor mechanics seems unique, I don't think many characters have good ones, so that's neat.

Guys, I think Daisy might be faster than Sonic.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

KingFoe on YouTube scored us some Classic mode gameplay:

Takeaways:
--Original format instead of the Beyblade or CYOA crud from Smash 4
--Giga Bowser instead of Master Hand (but it's still an HP fight)
--Difficulty appears to increase as you progress (not 100% sure on that; this footage is edited)
--I don't know what the mural means
--Fake Smash Balls can do ya dirty by blocking recovery paths
--RACE TO THE FINISH IS BACK

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Giga Bowser might be exclusive to Mario characters considering how Classic Mode works.

edit: I'm right, here's ROB's (spoilers I guess)

^Wow, that player doesn't understand ROB.
Here's Duck Hunt's boss.

If they're going down the predestined-roster-per-character route that bugged me so much in Brawl, then there better be a boss rush again so there's at least SOME way for every character to face off against every boss.....and if there's a boss rush, it better have freaking continues this time.

Edit to add: Here's some gameplay from the beginning of World of Light.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Some comments from Nintendo are starting to scare me. Almost like saying "**** off" to Melee fans, politely.

https://www.usgamer.net/articles/super- ... -interview
This is not Melee, this is not Wii. This is its own thing. If the Melee folks want to play Melee, go right ahead. Play the game you love to play.
I'm sure it's going to be good, I just need to stop reading about it because I'm a pessimist.

That really isn't what they're saying or implying.
On the competitive side, you have a very strong Smash Melee community. Are you hoping Ultimate will shift some of those players off a very old game finally?

JCR: I don't think there is a way to replace the Smash Bros Melee community, or any of those games. If people wanted to stick with the Wii U version or the 3DS version, it's up to them to choose the game they want to play. Super Smash Bros Ultimate was crafted with a lot of those people in mind.

The speed, the aggressive nature of the game, where you do want to go after the other person? It's not as defensive. A lot of those things were added because we heard input from the community. When people start getting their hands on it, they're going to feel it. This is not Melee, this is not Wii. This is its own thing. If the Melee folks want to play Melee, go right ahead. Play the game you love to play.

i dont think nintendo hates the melee community so much as they respect them from a distance. its probably better for both parties that nintendo doesn't meddle anyway.

that said, it does seem like the changes theyre making are to appeal to people who prefer the melee-style gameplay, and even some top players like mango and plup are interested in playing ultimate, so maybe there will be some overlap.

Supposedly Luigi can't get any lift out of Cyclone anymore, so clearly that's a concession to Melee-obsessives. :p

We have footage of Squad Strike mode (please excuse the human player's mind-boggling incompetence).

Also, this video of highly-questionable believability outlines the ways characters are unlocked. None of the methods, however, make much sense, at least not the way this guy explains them.

The game is coming out in just a few days, but with this you can take a look at every color and costume in the game in good quality. Usefully, this includes the Kanto starters, who get overlooked in relevant videos/images.
