Ion Fury

Ion Maiden Ion Fury is a FPS published by 3D Realms and developed by Voidpoint using Build, the 1995 engine behind games like Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, and Blood. The game was released last Thursday to positive reviews.

I'm a big fan of '90s 2.5D shooters, particularly DN3D, so I've been pretty excited about this one. Anyone here grabbed this game yet?

yo what the **** that's so cool

I am honestly not a huge fan of 2.5d shooters but I LOVE that this old beloved engine is still getting use and love today. It's amazing to see what new modern technology can make with new modern engines, but at the same time, it is really incredible seeing what can still be done with retro gaming engines because they were honestly an experience of their own. Reminds me a bit of AI's projects working with the OoT engine trying to make a game that closely resembles his vision of what it could have been.

What a cool project. I kind of want to get it just to fund the concept but I probably won't as it isn't something I would be likely to play.

the only thing I know about this game is that it was originally Ion Maiden but then they got copyright claimed.

Other than that it looks pretty rad, even though I don't have much nostalgia or experience with what it's trying to evoke.

Look, f**k RottedEra and all, but you really don't have to jump into a thread on the game and start a culture war dick slinging fight here over a minor part of the game that the dev team meant no harm by and was probably strong armed by their publisher into an apology over. It's a little petty, isn't it?

As for the game, I have an interest but old school FPSes can be fun or really frustrating for me, and I'm already playing all the Cacoaward Doom WADs right now, so I'll have to look at it first before I decide if I actually want it.

There is literally no quality of this game that benefits from using the F-slur. Get over it.

The developers said things in their Discord like "'mutilating a perfectly healthy body while you have depression and other big issues' could lead to suicide" and there's an area in the game with the word "fagbag."

Just seems really mean-spirited and hateful for the sake of it on the part of the developers.

yeahhhh I heard about this after I'd posted here about how cool the game looked. it's a damn shame because the game still looks cool. somehow though, I'm uninclined to support creators who think using homophobic slurs is somehow standing for anything other than being an *******

The thing that really disappoints me is how Duke Nukem, this game's inspiration, was originally very obviously a parody of the B-rated sci-fi of the past and the action heroes of the 80s and early 90s. Its sexism was tongue-in-cheek levels of brash, not meant to be taken at face value. The inheritors of DN and this kind of franchise (technically a spin-off of DN based on a cut character named Shelly) have in many places exchanged that for the real thing. The foundation necessary for Duke Nukem 3D to exist as it did is completley absent from today's younger generations, and the fedoras are just going to be looking at it like some sort of bastion of unwashed, unironic masculinity. DN was oftentimes a critique of hyper-masculine icons, and now its caretakers have very little comprehension of that.

Mmm... I don't know. Parody of cheesy science fiction? Maybe. But, I've always seen Duke Nukem as a glorification of hypermasculinity with maybe a knock towards superstar worship at the time... and cops. Then again, by the time I even knew of Duke Nukem, its creator was far more known as the personification of scope creep than as the creator of a landmark PC title. So, I'm aware that it might just be what I gained from the franchise. Around that time, I was far more sex negative than I am now so I'm probably less receptive to Nukem's antics than I would be if the same game came out today. Can't say for sure.

So I caught up on the controversy today.

I just want to review...

Kargath reawakened on VGF just to strut about a bar graph as a badge of honor because the devs apologized for being insensitive?

like, ok dude.

I've never been too much of a fan of FPS, especially not the classics (though I played anything as a kid), but I might try the upcoming Switch version if there's a physical release. Seems like a gender swapped Duke Nukem, which is sort of neat if done right.
