I did this one year way back but forgot to do it annually.
Another year is ending. What have you learned? What haven't you learned? Did you gain a lot of XP? What do you hope for in the future? What are you striving for?
Here's some stuff I want to share about my experiences this year. You don't have to follow my format by any means. Just share anything you want about your year, the good, the bad, and the ugly. The best and worst of anything.
What I'm Proud of: Continuing to spearhead my webseries animation called Space Hotel. Plowed through some complicated matters. Aaaaany moment now the preview will be finished and I can start a GoFundMe and launch it.
Best Video Game I Played this Year: Dark Souls (PS3) - first time I ever played it. I know people complain about its difficulty and whatever - frankly, I loved it. I loved the brooding, sword-and-sorcery atmosphere. I loved the online interactions. I loved leveling up. I loved it so much that right after I finished it, I continued being glued to the game and started my new game immediately. It takes a lot for me to do that. Usually when a game has a "New Game +", I go, "Okay, I'm done for now. I'll do the New Game + in some indefinite time in the future." Not this game. I wanted to jump right back in knowing what I knew and working towards the second ending.
Worst Video Game I Played this Year: Ys I & II Chronicles (PSP) - there have been way worse. Out of all the games I played though this year, this was more towards the bottom of the barrel. A resounding "Okay." I liked the graphics and the music. The original games were relatively short and they did something weird where they kept the same length in the first Ys but added some stuff in Ys II. And you know what they added in the Ys II section? An escort mission. Joy. The Ys part was a breeze but the Ys II section always lost my interest. I tried to finish this compilation like three times in the past several years; I always lost interest in Ys II.
Most Fun I Had This Year: Visiting Kansas/Missouri for the first time (first time in the Midwest) for a friend's wedding. Everything was cheap. The food was amazing. Fun times were had by all.
Coolest Moment this Year: Seeing Niagara Falls for the very first time with my girlfriend.
Not the Coolest Moment at all this Year: Attending a Super Smash Bros. Wii U Tournament at a local retro video game store by myself, losing, and overhearing people make fun of me after I lost. Eesh. That was awkward. I never felt so ashamed in a very long time. Like "I'm probably beet red right now" kind of ashamed. I had nobody to fall back to, so I just stood there.
Did I Get Any Celebrity Autographs? Yes. Jennifer Egan at a college. She signed my copy of her book “The Keep”
Best New Restaurant I Ate in: Q39 – 11051 Antioch Road, Overland Park, KS 66210
I guarantee you that if you don’t live in the Midwest, you have never had barbecue like this in your life. The food here will change your outlook on barbecue forever. This restaurant was right across from where I stayed at in Kansas for my friend's wedding. I went there at least once a day with my friends for the entire time we were there. The only bad part about eating this food is coming back home and never finding barbecue this good. Seriously. I had ribs for the first time after my trip at a Ruby Tuesday’s and was so utterly depressed at how bad the barbecue was. I almost never feel like eating barbecue ever again unless it’s at Q39.
Worst New Restaurant I Visited: Golden Lotus, at the Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls, Canada
The food was overpriced and the waiter was a dick. He didn’t believe that my girlfriend and I could use chopsticks so he gave us forks and knives and laughed at us saying we probably couldn’t use chopsticks the correct way.
Best Movie I Watched in Theaters: Mission: Impossible – Fallout
I have to say – the Mission: Impossible movies have been only getting better and better with each installment (We won’t talk about Mission: Impossible II. Nobody talks about Mission: Impossible II). And it’s partly a shame because of how utterly weird Tom Cruise has become over the years with that Scientology thing. But you have to admit it – he has an insane passion to give us the most insane action sequences – literally risking his life. This movie would make you excuse Tom Cruise weirdness – he could honestly be so much worse than what we’ve seen going on in Hollywood. In the recent Mission: Impossible movies, we haven’t seen these sort of action sequences in a looong time. We always complain about how action sequences have become infested with CGI. Well, here’s you go. The action sequences are not only the most insane part of this movie – the plot is brilliant. Every thirty minutes I kept getting slapped in the face with another twist and turn. The overarching personal story of Ethan Hunt since Mission: Impossible III has developed really well. Usually in movies like this, I have a certain idea of where the plot is going. I really didn’t this time around. I also love a certain callback to the best episode of the old Mission: Impossible TV show.
Worst Movie I Watched in Theaters: Johnny English Strikes Again
I’ve always been a Rowan Atkinson fan. Spy spoofs have been pretty dead since Austin Powers. Atkinson has the potential to pull it off but the script is just, well, crap. Generally unfunny and could make you snore.
What I Hope for Next Year: To start Space Hotel. To keep on writing stories like I always do but actually get some final drafts down. I want TWO final drafts down. I'm sticking to two. That's a reasonable goal. Ain't it?
Video game-wise - I really want to finish Final Fantasy XII and Final Fantasy XV so I can officially say that I beat every single Final Fantasy game and I can complete my grand review of the entire series.
