A mondegreen /ˈmɒndɨɡriːn/ is a mishearing or misinterpretation of a phrase as a result of near-homophony, in a way that gives it a new meaning.
Basically, when a sentence or lyric says one thing, but you hear it as something else similar-sounding.

The chorus of "There Must Be an Angel" by Eurythmics features a repetition of the words "Must be talking to an angel." When I first heard the song playing over the scratchy loudspeakers at work, I thought it sounded like "Must be talking to a ninja." Would've been cooler that way, too.

True story: that song was popular when Jason the red ranger was leaving Power Rangers, and I totally kept picturing him when the song would play. I don't recall if I actually thought the song was about him.

Also, I totally hear the "Starbucks lovers" in "Blank Space" now. Considering I listened to that song like 10 times last night, I'm surprised it didn't subliminally plant a desire for a chai latte in my brain.

Another one: "L.O.V.E." by Ashlee Simpson. I thought the chorus was "'Ello, 'ello, 'ello, 'ello V.E.," and that "V.E." was some kind of British slang. Like, "'ello guvnah, 'ello V.E."

Took me a while to realize she was just spelling out the word "love." I felt pretty stupid after that.

So. Bump.

All through my dumb misspent childhood, I'd hear 'Iron Maiden----------The Trooper' on occasion, and I misheard the lyric "the mighty roar of the russian guns" as "the manual of the blesséd guns". I pictured a strange, perhaps mystical booklet of guns the Lord really liked. Sort of a weird NRA necronomicon. Like, the kind of thing might be a quest object in the next Borderlands. A grail diary that leads you to The Holy Sniper Rifle, that never runneth out of ammo and whose buttstock is made of wood from the True Cross (guaranteed crit, too, man), and the sawn-off shottie-two-hottie of St Jeanne d'Arc, and Ex-Calibre, the .45 wielded by Arthur, Once and Future Sheriff of Albion (God created men---------the Lady of the Lake made 'em equal).

Is there a term for when you think lyrics should go a certain way and then they don't and you're disappointed?

I know there's a term for when you think a song sucks and everyone else inexplicably loves it-----------it's 'American Pie'. Ahahaha.

in the full version of the Persona 3 opening theme ("Burn My Dread") the very last line goes:

"And I will raise the sun
With the pride of the living."

but because of the singer's accent, for the longest time I thought it was:

"And I will raise the sun
With the plight of the living."

and to this day I'm disappointed because plight is so much better

Egg McMuffin inside of ham.
Egg McMuffin inside of ham.
Muuuuuuuuuffffiiiiiiinnnn, inside of, muuuuuuufiiiiin, inside of that,
egg muffin inside of ham and
I'll finish it off with coffee.

And in the definitive edition....

Egg McMuffin inside of ham
Egg McMuffin inside of ham
Oh my visions inside of that
Normal visions imagine that
Egg Muffin inside of ham and then
I will finish it off with coffee
