A prototype build of Super Mario Bros. 2 uses as its underground theme a modified version of the one from SMB3, rather than an updated version of Doki Doki Panic's underground theme as in the final version of the game.

The Japanese name for Night Slash, a Dark-type move in the Pokemon series, is Tsujigiri ("Crossroad Killing"), referring to the practice where a samurai would test the effectiveness of a new katana by murdering a random commoner, typically at night.

That's a fairly decent localisation change, it evokes the concept well once you understand the original version.

^I learned that when I watched the miniseries Shogun as a child.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

On a similar note:

Mirror Move is named ōmugaeshi ("parrot mimicry"), which is why it's classified as a Flying-type move.

Fake Out is named nekodamashi after a sumo wrestling technique which translates to "cat deception", hence the move's prevalence among cat Pokemon lines (Meowth, Skitty, Glameow, etc.).

Fury Cutter -> renzokugiri (Successive Cut) is another one that made more sense before localization.

Sword and sumo techniques are pretty common names for moves. There's also Cut (iaigiri -> the cliche cut that slides away a second later) and Low Kick (ketaguri -> The sumo ankle kick), among a lot of other fighting type moves. It makes finding translations a pain.

The Game Boy Advance development kit included a tech demo based on Yoshi's Story meant to show off some of the system's graphical capabilities. It includes a number of modified and unused YS sprites, including a rather terrifying Bullet Bill.

Although the overworld in The Adventure of Link is swarming with Ganon's minions, most of the foes you encounter within palace walls are not truly "evil", but rather were placed there by the ancient King of Hyrule to test the hero's courage. The Zelda Encyclopedia elaborates on some:
  • Iron Knuckles were originally the king's elite guard, and after the king's death "swore an oath to forever guard the Great Palace."
  • Fokka (the bird knights) were "bred from birds" by the king to guard the Great Palace.
  • Mazura (aka Horsehead) was "created from a horse" by the king.
  • Jermafenser (aka Helmethead) was a former captain of the elite guard and was "given new life by the King of Hyrule."
  • Rebonack was specially selected from the king's elite guard.
  • The Thunderbird was "an artificial life form created by the king" to protect the Triforce of Courage.

Sounds like the king of Hyrule in the timeline was, uh, maybe a villain. They should expand on that somehow, because he seems suspicious.

I'd say every king of Hyrule we've seen has been at least a little bit evil.

The name Donkey Kong was meant to mean Stupid Gorilla because Miyamoto thought Kong meant gorilla in English.
